Focus on photography

We launched our luxury ethical Eco & Bee Friendly collection on the second anniversary of The Soap Co. back in October 2017. To help us capture the 'buzz' of our new products at a photo shoot, we enlisted the creative spark of both Ellen Jonsson - a graphic design student at Central Saint Martins - and Adil, a newly discovered friend of The Soap Co. and a physics student who enjoys photography.

Here's what Ellen shared about her experience:

"I often seem to have a disposable camera with me as I think it's a great way to document my everyday life and it creates beautiful memories.

"During my summer internship at CLARITY, I was asked for my input on the campaign shoot for the Eco & Bee Friendly collection. When I looked at the range and thought about what the goals were, it became clear that the updated bottle design - with the addition of coloured braille – had to be the highlight.

"I wanted to focus on the new colours – red and green, respectively for the Geranium & Rhubarb and Wild Nettle & Sage scents – so we used vivid hues and highlighted the key ingredients – like sprigs of sage and rhubarb stalks – with matching painted colour schemes.

"I take inspiration from the still life photography of yesteryear and we started out with the idea of referencing classic baroque still-lives – a much more dark and rich kind of photography. However, in the end, we decided to maintain the minimalist aesthetic of the brand and evoke the eco credentials of the ingredients and their beautiful scents. Interestingly, fresh sage takes very well to emulsion paint, the room smelled great!

"The shoot itself was a bellyful of laughs. It was a long and tiring day but I'm really proud how it turned out. It is hugely inspiring to meet and work alongside all the people whose lives have been truly changed for the better as a result of The Soap Co.'s social action. As someone who is conscious about environmental issues, it is comforting to see the care with which the product ingredients and packaging have been selected to minimise any negative impact on our precious planet."

Ellen's eye-catching design influenced the ES magazine ad we were gifted at the end of last year, as well as the striking pre-Christmas campaign on London Black Cabs. The Soap Co.'s Geranium & Rhubarb gifts sets were also featured on ITV's This Morning Show, and we're sure Ellen's input was a key part of that!

In our next blog, we'll meet Adil, our not so shy shoot photographer.
