Based in East London, and with a traditional workshop in the Lake District, The Soap Co. is a social enterprise creating and manufacturing soap products with sophisticated fragrances, minimalist design and a strong social and environmental ethos.
We create employment for people who are blind or otherwise disabled or disadvantaged and strive to reduce our impact on the environment.
Our parent company is CLARITY Employment for Blind People, a registered charity and the UK’s oldest surviving social enterprise, which has been employing, training and supporting people with disabilities since 1854. At The Soap Co. we create a stable and friendly workplace to support our employees to build their skills, confidence and independence. Our mission is to provide a stepping stone into other employment for those who can achieve it, whilst providing a long-term job for those for whom this goal is less likely.
We currently employ more than 105 people across the country - 80 percent of whom are blind, or otherwise disabled or disadvantaged - and we aim to generate over 60 new job opportunities every year.
In 2015, we created 11,250 employment days. 49 people were bought back into employment after a period of unemployment lasting at least 6 months and 28 people moved onto “mainstream” employment. You can get to know us better by reading some of our bios below.
Launched in September 2015, we aim to create a brand that demonstrates that there is no trade-off between award winning design, responsible living and social purpose products. Our first year has shown that this is possible – our products have outperformed other luxury brands in consumer testing, we won a prestigious D&AD Pencil for Design and Inclusive Packaging Design in May 2016; and we created 64 new jobs.
We believe that everyone who wants to work should be given the opportunity to do so. We know that consumers and businesses alike can contribute to the creation of employment through what they buy. We are proud to say that every time you use a product from The Soap Co., you are creating opportunities for people who are blind or otherwise disabled or disadvantaged who create, pack, sell and distribute our soaps with care.
